As a family, we have owned and raised Rottweilers for
over 20 years. The following note is based on our experience.
There
is no doubt that the Rottweiler carries some genetic quality of
ferociousness. But it is exactly this quality which has been used by so many
owners all over the world, to make it into an ideal Watch Dog and Companion
Dog. The secret lies in SOCIALISATION. What is the socialization? If
Rottweiler puppies are raised without any human companionship, fed by only 1
handler, and not allowed to mingle with other family members, they generally
become guarded and ferocious. In some cases, only a few family members with
whom the dog has been associated with are able to approach the dog. But
if all the family members participate in the raising of the puppy in a
friendly and social manner, then when the puppy grows up, it will become an
excellent Guard Dog, Protector of Family & Property, and an ideal Companion
Dog. It is a mistaken belief that if the dog is raised in an isolated
manner, it will become a good security dog. In the case of Rottweilers, our
experience is that however much you allow the dog to socialize with family
and friends, once the dog crosses a certain age (around 9 to 10 months) the
dog naturally develops excellent guarding instincts towards the family.
In fact, in our family, we introduce the dog to all our friends, staff who
work in the house and even then, we find the Rottweilers Guarding instincts
to be very sharp, and the dogs have an innate ability to recognize the
Pecking order (recognizing who is the head of the family etc.). If you
and your family can participate in raising the Rottweiler Puppy please think
of bringing one home. If none of you in the family have time for the
Rottweiler Puppy, you should opt for a more docile breed.
