Origin and History
Native to the Rampur region in Uttar Pradesh, between Delhi and Bareilly.
Developed by Nawab Ahmad Ali Khan Bahadur of Rampur in the early 1800s.
He crossed Afghan Tazi hounds with English Greyhounds to get speed and heat tolerance.
Used by Mughal nobles and local kings for hunting jackals, foxes, leopards, deer, and even boar.

Look and Build
Height: 56-76 cm / 22-30 inches.
Males usually taller than females.
Weight: 23-32 kg / 51-71 lbs.
Build: Tall, muscular, lean, short coat.
Looks similar to a Sloughi or Greyhound.
Colors: Brindle, black, grey, fawn, brown, white.

Temperament
Brave, loyal, intelligent, sensitive.
Calm and affectionate with family, but reserved with strangers.
Obedient to the owner but independent-minded - typical sighthound trait.
High energy. Needs daily runs and mental stimulation to stay balanced.

Working Ability
Built for speed and endurance over long distances without tiring.
Heat tolerant, so they handle Indian weather better than most hounds.
Now used by the Border Security Force for border surveillance, counterinsurgency, and commando duties like helicopter slithering. They even marched in the 2025 Republic Day parade.
